I’ve had several clients come to me and ask if location marketing is important. The truth is that it has never been as important as it is right now. A recent report suggested that by 2012 PC’s would be obsolete – completely taken over by handheld devices and pads or laptops. The survey also suggested that many smartphone users were using their phones to browse social networks while at home.
But here’s the kicker.
All of those people who are giving up their PCs for smartphones and pads are using apps.
Now, you may not care if people are using apps, but you may care to know that the people who search for you on popular social networks like Yelp and Gowalla and take the time to check in on Foursquare using their smartphones and ipads are the same people who will be using apps combined with GPS to locate places to eat, shop and play – on the fly.
If you aren’t using location marketing to get your name out there, you can guarantee that your competition is already there. Google and yahoo maps was the first to really push location, location,
location and businesses flocked to get listed there (still a very good idea, by the way) because people could search for “shopping” or “pizza” or “dentist” and find the closest around their location. People still do this, but now with an ever growing network of apps and social media which allows people to search for places close to them based on their GPS location and then tell others where they are, what they are doing and what they thought of you the very minute they are doing it means that you better be there when they look for you and you better be monitoring what is being said.
Okay, so that sounds harsh, but it’s true.
Couple the fact that people are searching for you on social networks with the trend for location searching like “ohio social media company” and you better get crafty and fast.
I heard a person say the other day that they didn’t need to promote their air conditioning repair company online because they weren’t big enough to worry about it. I almost told the guy that his reasoning behind it was WHY he isn’t big enough. His potential customers have typed in “Columbus air conditioning repair” and found his competition either in the search engines or on their smart phone through a GPS linked app. If you aren’t there. You’re toast.

So, I have spent most of my day snooping around and was fortunate enough to run into some really cool tools that are:
1. free (yay) and,
2. easy to use.
So, here they are on the site. Enjoy!
KEYWORD CHECKER – Find out the keyword density of your site. The larger the word, the more densely it is used.
Keyword Tool .. . This tool provides you keyword suggestions and reports on their monthly search estimates.
Finally… the backlink tool. OMG you have to use this! Now! I mean it!
This tools searches for websites of the theme you specify that contain keyphrases like “Add link”, “Add site”, “Add URL”, “Add URL”, “Submit URL”, “Add Article” etc. Most of the results could be quality potential backlinks.
So, you have some money to market your business. What are you going to do with it?
Chances are you run right for the google adwords, yahoo advertising or facebook ads pages and place your bets with the PPC gods, right? Well, okay, some of you do and I’m not here to say that it is an all-and-all bad thing. PPC has a time and a place. With that said, here are a few times you should use PPC for your business:
- When you first open your business.
- If you have a special offer.
- If you want fresh leads.
That’s it people. That is it.
You want to make your money WORK for you… not the other way around. So, although you may not see a huge spike in sales in the beginning, the work goes towards the greater good of your business if you:
- Write and distribute articles.
- Write and distribute press releases.
- Get listed on Yelp, Yahoo and Dmoz, etc….
- Build backlinks to your site
- Post on your blog.
- Publish videos.
Okay, you get the idea. You see where I am going. That $0.97 you spent on ONE CLICK just went bye-bye. After 10 clicks you could have purchased an article over at www.ArticlesThatRock.com (I know the owner and the writing team behind this site, actually, I built the team so I know they are the best). That one article can be published and spread like wildfire throughout the internet and guess what… IT’S NOT GONE AFTER ONE CLICK! I have seen articles go viral, articles with thousands of views. Articles, articles, articles EVERYWHERE! They increase page rank, SEM, SEO and more. As do press releases and more. Also, videos increase traffic to your site.
HERE’S THE POINT.
If you have to PAY each time someone gets directed to your website… STOP IT RIGHT NOW! Okay, so don’t stop it if you meet the criteria listed before, but do stop it if you have the money to pay someone to write content for you. It just makes sense to be working on a marketing strategy that will work LONG TERM for your business.
Get to it!
